Way of Songun

One Evening, on my way home from work, I heard some veterans of the Korean war singing a song. The words of the song were:

Where's your end, way?
You're too long to cover.
Let me not look back on your course
There won't be any regret along with you.

While I was contemplating the song sung by the second-generation revolutionaries who had dedicated their lives proudly to the country, an idea of the way flashed across my mind.

There are ways everywhere you go on the earth. Some of them are straight, plain and asphalted highways; some are lanes along fields with waving ears of rice; some are paths through forests. There are literally numerous roadways in the world.

Besides all such ways, there is still another way just for the Korean people, a way other than natural ones. It's the one of the Songun politics followed by the leader Kim Jong Il in order to defend the dignity and sovereignty of the nation, achieve national reunification and build a great prosperous powerful nation.

The mid-90s of the past century was the time when the country was subjected to the "Arduous March" due to the ever-increasing difficulties from the US imperialists' moves to isolate and stifle the Korean nation and from consecutive natural disasters. At the time the leader raised the serious question of whether the Korean people would remain a sovereign nation and independent guards of honour or fall to the colonial slavery under imperialism, and gave a philosophical answer that the key lay in holding higher the banner of Songun politics.

He stated both the independence of the country and the people and the victorious progress of the revolution depended on the Songun politics, and that they should not release the hold of the gun as long as there remained imperialism on the earth. Then, he got on the road of the Songun politics and went a long, unending way to see his soldiers of the People's Army.

His continuous way led to Heights 1211 and 351, Taedok and Osong mountains, which are all frontline posts just opposite enemy troops in the eastern, middle and western parts of the front. Every place he visited effected new miracles.

His visit to the People's Army resulted in the build-up of invincible forces as capable as to safeguard the country against any danger, and the creation of the soldiers' laudable culture of the Songun era; his visits to manufacturing enterprises brought about one new innovative change after another, activating them to normal operation.

Kim Jong Il established the political mode of Songun that demands advancing the overall socialist cause with the People's Army as the main force and pillar of the revolution and on the principle of giving priority to the military affairs. Then he has pushed his way of Songun steadfastly with infinite devotion to and efforts for the nation.

I was convinced that the bright future and the victory of the socialist cause and the destiny of the nation were all surely guaranteed on the way of Songun thanks to the great force of the Songun politics.

Keenly awakened to the vitality of the Songun politics through their personal experiences, the Korean people are filled with the determination to invariably follow the way of Songun opened by Kim Jong Il.

As if confirming the spiritual faith of the people, the veterans’ tune was ringing afar over the beautiful evening sky of the capital city.
