People’s Army Is Pillar of Songun Revolution

In Korea the Peple’s Army is called pillar of the revolution. This means that the army is the main driving force that plays the pivotal role in accelerating the socialist cause, and the mass that is setting a model in all aspects—in loyalty to the Workers’ Party of Korea and the national leader, in the sense of organization and discipline, and in cohesion and fighting spirit.

As the house will fall down when its pillars are removed, so the socialist cause would come to failure and frustration if not supported by the revolutionary pillar.

In view of the history of the past world socialist movement and the anti-imperialist struggle, the preceding revolutionary theory failed to give a correct position and role of the army in the revolution and construction, and, especially, to suggest the army as an important political force in the revolution. It was recognized as an infallible revolutionary formula to conduct the revolutionary struggle and the construction work with the working class as the elite and main force. Such being the reason, the history of the socialist movement left behind serious lessons.

Today the People’s Army in Korea is the pillar and the main driving force in defending and advancing the revolutionary cause forward.

In retrospect, the Korean revolution started with the gun and moved ahead victoriously supported by the gun. Depending on the revolutionary armed forces the national liberation was achieved in August 1945, the WPK was founded and the DPRK was established. Since liberation the People’s Army has been standing in the van of the fierce class struggle against the imperialists and reactionaries of all hues, never hesitating to lay down their lives; they have made breakthroughs in socialist construction undergoing mountains of hardships and ordeals; and they have held fast to the revolutionary flag creditably.

The tradition of making progress on the strength of the revolutionary armed force is still steadfastly carried on at present when socialism is moving ahead in defiance of the imperialist encirclement. The Korean people are convinced that they will emerge victorious in the confrontation between their socialism and capitalism because the People’s Army stands the reliable revolutionary pillar in defending the WPK and the socialist system.

The People’s Army is the strongest defender of the leadership of the revolution.

The assault of the imperialists and the class enemies in their attempt to kill the socialist cause is always spearheaded to the leadership of the revolution. It is essential to have a powerful gun in order to thwart at every step the vicious and crafty policy of the enemy to topple the revolutionary leadership.

To defend the leadership at any cost is the supreme mission of the People’s Army. And the army has a long-standing tradition of it. It was entirely due to the revolutionary soldiers armed with the spirit of death-defyingly defending their headquarters that the headquarters of the Korean revolution was safe and secure in the years before liberation when a bloody fighting was waged against the Japanese imperialists armed to the teeth.

The traditional spirit of death-defyingly defending the leadership has been taken over soundly generation after generation.

Now the People’s Army is producing many heroes who have a thoroughgoing spirit of leadership defense and set practical examples. The soldiers are all firmly resolved to mercilessly castigate those who dare to harm the leadership of the revolution even by firing or blowing themselves like a gun or a bomb.

The People’s Army is the mainstay also in hastening the building of a great prosperous powerful nation. Holding aloft the slogan “Let us take charge of both national defense and socialist construction!” they have been making breakthroughs on the most laborious and crucial fields of the effort to build a great prosperous powerful socialist nation. Engaged in different sectors of the national economy—especially, the agriculture, power generation, and coal mining—they opened up the highway to a prosperous nation by working resolutely in a do-or-die spirit under very destitute conditions. The Anbyon Youth Power Station, land realignment, livestock and fish farms are some of the creations they have made throughout the land for the country’s prosperity and the people’s wellbeing.

The People’s Army is exemplary also in imbuing the whole society with revolutionary and sound ideological and moral standards and culture.

The army is uninterruptedly pumping the revolutionary soldier spirit into the veins of society. All the models whether in implementing WPK policies in any case or in working in the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and comradeship are to be found in the army. The revolutionary fighting morale and manner of work are also what they have brought into full play. The cultured and sentimental way of life of the People’s Army whereby they build up an immaculate and cultured living environment full of revolutionary songs anywhere and any time, has ceaselessly found its way through society, gradually sweeping the whole land with a revolutionary and emotional rhythm of life, that is, the socialist way of life.

Great is the might of the People’s Army that has grown up as pillar and mainstay of the Songun revolution. They are fully determined to deal out a severe punishment to those who dare to encroach upon even an inch of their land or a grass blade or a tree branch.

The People’s Army will continue to creditably perform its mission in support of the idea and leadership of the Korean People’s Army Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il.
