Songun Eight Scenic Spots
FROM OLDEN TIMES Korea is called a land as beautiful as a golden tapestry, because mountain scenery is attractive, water is clear and many enchanting views can be seen.
In recent years “Songun eight scenic spots” produced by the Songun era have newly spread out and these places of scenic beauty are now regarded as the pride of our motherland.
1.Sunrise Seen From Mt. Paektu
DARKNESS REIGNS ALL OVER as yet. The eastern sky over there has turned green and suddenly a gleam of red light uprolls to heaven through the rifts in the clouds. Then the morning sun rises from Mt. Paektu, with this gleam of light becoming a thick red line and brightening the sky and land dazzlingly.
The rising of the sun is full of passion, warmth and purity. It makes fresh strength and courage well up all over our bodies, putting forth the light of blazing flames. It looks as if smiling radiantly, looking down the whole world. And it is neat and proper as if trimmed and washed off...
The emotion and charm peculiar to sunrise seen from Mt. Paektu is the zenith of mystery, elegance and sublimity.
One day in October Juche 87(1998) leader Kim Jong Il went up Mt. Paektu early in the morning to see this superb and exciting view.
At that time he said in the following vein:
As the morning of Korea breaks here in Mt. Paektu, so the Juche revolutionary cause initiated by Comrade Kim Il Sung started here. Whenever I see the rising of the blazing red sun from Mt. Paektu, I further confirm my determination to bring the Juche revolutionary cause to completion without fail.
2. Snow-Covered Scene of Tabaksol Army Post
KIM JONG IL BEGAN TO administer Songun politics since he visited Tabaksol (bushy young pine tree) army post on New Year’s Day Juche 84(1995). That day the snow-covered scene presented a grand spectacle. Frostwork formed all night through on thickly growing bushy young pine trees was dazzlingly glittering in the morning sun, providing an uncommon snow-covered scene.
Since then the Tabaksol army post has become a tradition and a fine example to be followed in the Songun era. That is why the Korean people are fond of the snow-covered scene of the Tabaksol post.
3. Azaleas on Chol Pass
IN ORDER TO DEFEND THE country and socialism Kim Jong Il visited many units of the Korean People’s Army over the past ten years, crossing over the Chol Pass, a mountain pass over sharp-cut cliffs which were so steep that even the clouds were said to have crossed it resting at frequent intervals. Azaleas on the Chol Pass have spread out a sea of flowers along the path he followed.
Reflecting the minds of so many army men and people to always make fragrance of flowers hang in the air over the long, long path he follows to administer Songun politics, azaleas on the Chol Pass always bloom red in their minds.
4. Brilliantly Illuminated River Jangja
HUNDREDS OF SMALL-TO-medium-sized power stations have been newly built along the River Jangja which takes its rise in high and low Rangnim mountains.
With water lapping at the shore, the River Jangja is brilliantly illuminated at night, because the people in Jagang Province set up the minor power stations on their own in the years of the “Arduous March” to solve the most strained electric power problems.
5. Echo of Ullim Falls
THE ULLIMRYONG WAS A remote mountainous region which was covered with dense primeval forests and was devoid of even a narrow path to be used by people. But it has been converted into a splendid recreation ground by the efforts of men of the People’s Army stationed there.
In particular, the appearance of the Ullim Falls presents a more exciting sight, because water measuring more than a stretch of both arms cascades down the mountainside from the middle of a rugged cliff with light sounds.
6. Horizon of Handre Plain
IN THE PAST PEASANTS ON the Handre (a dipper for drawing water from a well) Plain had to dig through the bottom of a brooklet and draw up gradually gathered water dipper by dipper to do farming, for they suffered from the shortage of water resources too much. Hence the name Handre Plain.
Thanks to land realignment the appearance of the Handre plain in Thaechon County, North Phyongan Province has changed completely.
Small-sized paddy fields handed down generation after generation disappeared and large plots of standardized shapes and sizes have spread out, reminding one of a large plain.
7. Sea of Potato Blossoms at Taehongdan
A SEA OF POTATO blossoms unfolded on a wide expanse of the plain at Taehongdan. This is a fine sight brought about in the course of making a revolution in potato farming, which has swept over the country.
Kim Jong Il regarded the bringing about of a revolutionary turn in potato farming as a link in the whole chain of the work for building a great prosperous powerful nation and visited there on several occasions in a year alone so that this revolution spread all over the country.
8. Fine Spectacle of Poman-ri
PALATIAL TILE-ROOFED houses standing in rows, a wide variety of fruit trees growing in abundance on a hill at the back of the village and fertile fields and neatly-built fish breeding grounds on the plain in front of the village—this is a complete view of Poman-ri, Sohung County, North Hwanghae Province.
Poman-ri has undergone face-lifting and has been converted into an Arcadia in the era of the Workers’ Party, representing a fine spectacle of socialism. Its fine spectacle is something to be proud of.
