Orascom Telecom (aus Ägypten) meldete gestern in einer Pressemeldung, dass erste Telefonate (zur Prüfung der Funktionsfähigkeit) auf dem neuen Mobilfunknetz in Nordkorea geführt wurden:

Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. (“OTH”) is proud to announce
the successful completion of the first call on the CHEO Technology JV Company’s (“CHEO”) network in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (“DPRK”).
The success of this trial network using WCDMA (3G) mobile echnology represents the first step in providing coverage throughout the DPRK. CHEO, a subsidiary of OTH, is looking to launch its full commercial mobile services within the second half of 2008.
In January 2008 OTH, through its subsidiary CHEO, was awarded the first commercial license in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The license has a duration of 25 years with an exclusivity period of four years.
