Burmese Military "Moving Away" from NK
By Kim Tae Hong
In the run up to President Barack Obama’s visit to Burma later today, the U.S. says it believes the Burmese military is “reducing its relationship” with North Korea, although the process is not yet complete.
According to U.S. National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes, “We’ve had a dialogue with the Burmese government about the need to reduce their relationship with North Korea. We’ve seen them take some positive steps in that direction.”
Speaking to the media en route to Bangkok at the start of President Obama’s Southeast Asian tour, Rhodes continued, “What we’d like to see, again, is an end to the relationship that has existed between Burma and North Korea. So there, too, we see that as an issue where they have been moving in a positive direction. We’d like to reinforce that action and, again, see Burma break its military ties with the North Koreans.”
President Obama is due to meet the Burmese president, Thein Sein, along with Aung San Suu Kyi, MP, during his three-day visit.
