National Memorial Service for Kang Kon Held

Pyongyang, September 8, 2010 (KCNA) -- A national memorial service for revolutionary fighter Kang Kon was held at the Central Youth Hall Wednesday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his death.

Attending the service were senior party, army and state officials, the chairperson of a friendly party, officials of party, armed forces and power organs, public organizations, ministries and national institutions, service persons of the Korean People's Army and the Korean People's Internal Security Forces, officials of scientific, educational, cultural and art, public health and media institutions, bereaved families of revolutionary martyrs and working people in the city.

Kang Kon was an indomitable revolutionary who devoted everything to the struggle for the victory of the revolutionary cause of Juche with arms, single-mindedly remaining true to the leadership of President Kim Il Sung.

Born into a poor peasant family in Sangju County, North Kyongsang Province, he embarked upon the road of revolution at his early age.

After joining the Anti-Japanese People's Guerrilla Army in April of Juche 22 (1933) he became a member of the party organization thanks to the deep trust and particularly profound loving care of the President. He was active as a platoon leader, a company political commissar, a regiment political commissar and a political commissar of a detachment.

He held important posts of chief of Camp No. 2 of the Security Officers Training Centre, vice-minister of National Defence and concurrently chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army in the period of building a new country. He made a great contribution to the victory in the hard-fought Fatherland Liberation War as chief of the general staff of the command of the front.

He fell in action at the age of 32 on Sept. 8, 1950 while commanding an offensive operation of KPA units to wipe out the U.S. imperialist aggressors.

The President made sure that the title of Hero of the Republic was awarded to Kang and the First Central Military Academy was named after him. In his reminiscences the President highly appreciated Kang's life and feats, noting that Kang dedicated even his last drop of blood to the revolution and performed great exploits in the field of building the people's armed forces.

The President saw to it that his bust and statue were erected at the Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery on Mt. Taesong and in Sariwon City, North Hwanghae Province respectively and urged the army and people of the DPRK to learn from his loyalty and steadfast revolutionary principle.

KPA General Ri Yong Ho, chief of the General Staff of the KPA, in his memorial address said that short as Kang's life was, it was a worthwhile one through which he taught in practice how a true revolutionary, an ardent patriot should hold the leader in high esteem and how one should live and struggle for the country and its people.

He called upon all the party members and other working people to cherish the loyalty to the party and the leader as revolutionary faith and obligation like the anti-Japanese revolutionary forerunners, defend the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea headed by General Secretary Kim Jong Il with their lives and consolidate as firm as a rock the single-minded unity of all the service persons and people united close around the headquarters of the revolution.
