May 21st Architecture Festival

Aus Anlass des jährlichen Architekturfestivals in Pyongyang findet im Mai 2012 eine voraussichtlich 6-tägige Reise mit Besuch des Festivals und architektonisch bedeutsamer Bauwerke statt.

Festival promotes architectural design

The May 21 Architecture Festival is an annual event in the country.

The festival has taken place 10 times until last year and in the period over 2 200 architectural designs for prize contest for over 30 projects, more than 2 600 treatises and some 360 programs and multimedia presentations were presented. In particular, the computer aided design has developed into three- and four-dimensional design, raising the country’s architectural design onto a higher level.

Novel ideas, excellent scientific treatises and programs among them have been widely introduced into practice and, therefore, public interest in the festival is growing day by day.

The 11th round of the festival took place at the People’s Palace of Culture in Pyongyang between May 3 and 6 under the sponsorship of the Central Committee of the Architects Union of Korea.

The festival was divided into a prize contest of architectural designs, a presentation of treatises on designing and construction of buildings and a competition of architectural designing programs and multimedia presentations, drawing prestigious architects and engineers, young architects and engineers, officials in the field of science and education and students.

Presented to the festival were more than 200 designs for prize contest including the plan of the central parts of Pyongyang, the plan of solar powered energy-saving dwelling house, the decoration design on both sides of roads and the introduction plan of geothermal water-based heating and cooling systems in buildings, over 230 treatises on architectural designing and construction and some 30 designing programs and multimedia presentations selected in the provincial and city architecture festivals.

The treatise “Scientific study of methods to apply elements of natural landscape to internal space”, which is aimed at closely combining nature with architectural space to provide people with more emotional and active ecological environment and ensure the architectural diversity of the internal space, an infrastructure management program Chukji 2.0 and an architectural design for modern houses Piyak-2 were highly appreciated at the festival. Top prizes were awarded to 18 participants, special prizes to 15 other people and group prizes to ten units.

Earlier, the 6th Symposium on Architectural Aesthetics took place to mark the 20th anniversary of the publication of Kim Jong Il’s work On Architecture on May 21 1991.

Pae Tal Jun, minister of State Construction Control, Tong Jong Ho, minister of Construction and Building-Materials Industry, Hwang Hak Won, minister of Urban Management, and other officials made speeches.

The speakers explained and proved that his work On Architecture is the only architectural programme in the country and encyclopedic theory of architecture for the originality and perfectness of its theoretical structure and the richness, profundity, scientific accuracy and truthfulness of its content.

The symposium served as an occasion to help the participants have a better understanding of the theories of interrelation between architecture and humankind and between architecture and society.
